Due to the ongoing uncertainty in New Caledonia, New Zealand’s national airline is advising passengers planning to travel to or from Noumea to postpone their trips until mid-December.
Air New Zealand said in a statement on Monday it had extended the suspension of its Auckland-Noumea route due to concerns for passenger safety.
On June 15, the national airline halted flights between Auckland and the French territory’s capital, Noumea, due to violent unrest.
The airline said it had originally planned to resume flights on September 28, but has now extended the suspension to December 14.
International general manager Jeremy O’Brien said “localised unrest” was continuing in New Caledonia and “safety was the priority”.
“We understand this may be disappointing for passengers who had travel plans to travel to or from Noumea and we sincerely regret the distress this may cause.
“We did not make this decision lightly, but as there are still pockets of civil unrest, safety is our top priority.”
The airline said passengers who booked flights to Noumea directly with Air New Zealand would automatically receive a credit towards their tickets.
“Due to limited options in the region and ongoing uncertainty, passengers will not be rebooked to Noumea on other services.”
“Passengers will also be able to opt for a full refund,” the airline said.
The company advises customers who booked through a travel agent to contact them directly to discuss available options.
