According to Reuters, citing BTA sources, US Vice President Kamala Harris has won the support of the majority of delegates at the Democratic National Convention and has become the presidential candidate.
President Joe Biden endorsed Harris on Sunday, but Harris dropped out of the race due to questions about her age and health. He pledged to remain president until his term ends on January 20, 2025. He vowed to do everything he can to support Harris.
An Associated Press poll of delegates shows the incumbent vice president with 2,538 delegates, well over the 1,976 needed to win the vote in the coming weeks. Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison said yesterday that the party will nominate a presidential candidate by August 7.
Delegates can still change their minds until Aug. 7, but no one else in the AP poll has received a ballot and 57 said they are undecided.

The New York Times said that nominating presidential candidates through virtual voting before the party’s national convention, which will be held in Chicago, Illinois from August 19 to 22, will turn the convention into a purely ceremonial event.
In her first public appearance on Monday, Harris rallied supporters with her maiden campaign speech in which she vowed to follow Republican nominee Donald Trump in the courtroom where she once served as a prosecutor.
Meanwhile, Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance attacked Kamala Harris during her first solo campaign event, a rally at her former high school in her hometown of Middleton.
“I said I was going to debate Kamala Harris, and now President Trump is going to debate her,” Vance said, laughing. “To be honest, I’m a little pissed about it.”
Vance also appeared to question Harris’ patriotism, saying she spoke “not with admiration but with condemnation” about the history of this country during her speech.
He added: “Not everything is perfect. It never is. But you, if you want to lead this country, you have to be grateful for it. You have to have a sense of gratitude. When I listen to Kamala Harris, she’s got to be grateful for it.”
The Kremlin also reacted to the possibility of Kamala Harris running for the US presidency, saying that the current vice president has not made a noticeable contribution to relations with Moscow, apart from some hostile remarks, Reuters reported.
The Kremlin cannot conclude what Harris’ candidacy will mean for relations between the two countries because Moscow has not seen anything from Harris’ side on Russian-U.S. relations so far, except for some hostile statements, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.
“At this time, we are unable to assess Harris’ potential candidacy from a bilateral perspective because her contributions to our bilateral relationship have thus far been overlooked,” he said.
“Some statements were full of hostile rhetoric against our country, but her behavior is neither a strength nor a weakness for our relations,” Peskov said.
Harris has repeatedly expressed support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and accused Russia of waging a “barbaric and inhumane” war.
