Jamaican-American Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough Democratic delegates to become the Democratic presidential nominee and defeat Republican Donald Trump, according to a poll. Associated Press Survey.
The development comes after President Joe Biden decided to give up his re-election bid.
Top Democrats quickly endorsed Harris, with prominent elected officials, party leaders and political organizations backing her candidacy. On Monday, her campaign set a new record for presidential donations in a 24-hour period.
As of Monday evening, state delegations including from Texas and Harris’ home state of California met to confirm their support for her. Harris had received the support of at least 2,579 delegates, more than the 1,976 needed to secure a first-round vote, according to an Associated Press tally. Delegates contacted by the AP did not mention other candidates.
Still, the AP has not declared Harris the presumptive nominee because convention delegates are still free to vote for their preferred candidate during the convention in August or in a virtual roll call vote before the convention in Chicago.

The AP tally is based on interviews with individual delegates, public statements from political parties and the endorsements of individual delegates.
Winning the nomination is just the beginning of an important political journey for Harris. After Biden announced his candidacy on Sunday, Harris must now choose a running mate and pivot a massive political operation initially built for Biden’s reelection to support her own candidacy.
On Sunday afternoon, Biden’s campaign officially transitioned to “Harris for President,” reflecting her takeover of Biden’s political operation, which included more than 1,000 staffers and nearly $96 million in campaign funds as of the end of June. Harris’ campaign reportedly raised an additional $81 million in the 24 hours after Biden’s endorsement, setting a presidential fundraising record with contributions from more than 888,000 donors.

Interest in Harris’ campaign has surged since the announcement, with more than 28,000 new volunteers signing up, a rate more than 100 times the average for Biden’s last campaign and highlighting the enthusiasm for Harris.
If elected, Harris will make history by becoming the first female president of the United States, the first Caribbean American president, and the first South Asian president.
