MADRID (Euronews) – The campaign committees of US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris formally amended their Federal Election Commission filings on Sunday to solidify Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. The White House backs Harris, who still must secure the necessary support to win the nomination at the Democratic National Convention next August.

“Vice President Harris is now a candidate for President of the United States in the 2024 elections and from now on will campaign solely for that office,” the document reads, according to US television network CNN.

It should be noted that the Biden-Harris campaign has $95.9 million (about 88 million euros) in funds that the Democratic Party can continue to use only if Harris wins the party nomination, according to the rules of the Electoral Commission. Harris is allowed to use them because she shares a campaign committee with the president.

Although important Democratic figures have yet to voice their support for Harris, such as Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or former President Barack Obama, other figures have done so.

California Governor Gavin Newsom assured that “no one is better than Harris” to defeat the “dark vision” of former President Donald Trump, who he accused of putting “democracy and the future at risk,” according to a message posted on your social network accounts

In addition, several members and former members of the Democratic National Committee submitted a letter calling for a vote for Harris and praising Biden for “all he has done and continues to do for the country and the world.”

“We believe our strongest candidate for president, who can best offer a clear and unifying vision for America’s future, is Vice President Kamala Harris,” the letter reads.

In fact, the Democratic convention delegation from Tennessee voted unanimously to endorse the incumbent vice president.

After Biden dropped out of the presidential race, the White House told CNN that the decision was not related to the president’s health, days after he pledged that he would reconsider his candidacy if his medical team recommended it.

In fact, according to a document published by his doctor, Kevin O’Connor, he has not undergone any new medical tests in recent days, beyond the necessary tests needed to treat himself against Covid-19, and his symptoms have begun to subside.
