Kamala Harris and Joe Biden will embark on their first joint campaign tour next week since the Democratic president announced his withdrawal from the US presidential race against Donald Trump.
Biden is eager to highlight his performance in the final months of his term and to support his incoming vice president, with whom he will attend an event organized on August 15 in Maryland, near Washington.
They will go there “Talk about the progress they’ve made in reducing costs to the American people”The White House said in a statement, adding that further details would be communicated later.
Inflation remains a weakness for the ruling Democratic Party ahead of the November election.
Harris has brought momentum to her base since Biden announced his resignation following a disastrous debate against Trump that highlighted concerns about his age and mental acuity.
The first female, Black and South Asian vice president in U.S. history held a series of rallies that drew crowds, raised record funds and erased the former’s lead in the polls.
Biden, by contrast, has kept a low profile, making only a handful of public appearances during a presidency that now looks shabby, with nearly six months until his successor takes office in January.
The president, who is currently spending a long weekend at his beach house in Delaware, is not expected to make major political appearances in support of Ms Harris before the Democratic national nominating convention in Chicago on August 19.
But there are signs that the veteran Democrat wants to burnish his record as he prepares to exit U.S. politics after nearly five decades.
Tight schedule
That includes doing everything she can to help ensure Ms. Harris’ victory over her old nemesis, Mr. Trump, and the opponent he defeated in the 2020 election.
Ms Harris attended a high-profile event with Mr Biden last week when they hosted American journalist Evan Gershkovich and other detainees who were released as part of a wide-ranging prisoner swap with Russia.
According to Politico, Kamala Harris particularly hopes that Joe Biden will gain support in key states such as Pennsylvania and Michigan, where he remains popular, especially among older white voters.
Mr Biden should ensure the focus remains on Ms Harris, with only limited campaign appearances in the fall, according to the same source.
The Democratic president came out earlier this week to warn of a repeat of the events following the 2020 election, when Trump challenged his defeat and his supporters stormed the Capitol in a bloody and traumatic day for American politics.
‘If Trump loses, I’m not sure at all’ In his first interview with CBS since dropping out of the election, Joe Biden said there would be a peaceful transition of power and said he was concerned about violence.
Among his other priorities at the end of his term is pushing for a ceasefire and an end to the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, an issue that continues to divide Democrats.
Mr Biden and the leaders of Egypt and Qatar invited the warring parties to resume negotiations on August 15, the same day he and Ms Harris jointly intervened, to reach a deal.
