The United Kenya coalition party will oppose any impeachment motion against Vice President Rigathi Gachagua in the House of Representatives, its leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, has announced.
Kalonzo, who was speaking at the requiem mass for Mbaitu FM journalist Mercy Mawia Mwangi at the Africa Inland Church in Milimani, stressed that the Wiper MP would also reject the nomination of the ODM Cabinet Secretary candidate during the vetting process.
Kalonzo criticised the government’s decision to appoint opposition MPs, saying such an act undermined the integrity of the opposition party. He insisted that the Azimio coalition remained united in upholding the rights of Kenyans.
“Poaching ODM members does not equate to establishing a government of national unity.” He said he was unhappy with opposition figures holding government positions.
In response to rumors about his political position, Musyoka denied claims that he relied on the influence of Azimio party leader Raila Odinga to maintain his political position. He admitted that he had heard people saying that his political strength was related to the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
“Some say Kalonzo cannot stand without Raila. Please let us go. We have stood before and have been misunderstood before.” Kalonzo commented. He clarified that his influence in Kenyan politics was established long before his collaboration with the former prime minister.
Kalonzo reiterated his resolve to remain in opposition and insisted the criticism would not sway him from joining President William Ruto’s government.
He criticised the ODM party for allowing some of its members to join Ruto’s cabinet despite being an opposition party. “ODM took their time to explain, but they still have a lot to do. The rest of us, though, are clear about our intentions.”
“We have absolutely no intention of joining President Ruto’s government, but we wish them all the best.”
