Prime Minister Kaya Kallas, who was recently approved by the European Council as a candidate for senior diplomatic representative, hopes to elect the next leader of the Reform Party at its congress.

“I have proposed that an extraordinary meeting of the Reform Party board be held on Friday to convene a general assembly to elect a new chairman of the party. If the new chairman is elected, he will also be able to form a new coalition, and I will then resign as prime minister,” Kallas told Estonia at a press conference for journalists at the European Council.

He believes that the conference can be held on July 14.

Callas declined to say who he would like to see as his successor.

“First, the people of the party will elect a new chairman, who will then also become the prime minister. My preference does not matter here,” he said.

Kallas said the next prime minister and government must continue to address current challenges.

“The challenges we face are not going away with me,” Karas said. “The budget has to be more in order, and we need to spend a lot of money on defense. The challenges are many, and everything we do has to be done.”

So far, the media has been talking about Hanno Pevkur and Kristen Michal as possible new chairmen of the Reform Party.
