Julian Alfred wins historic gold and silver at Paris Olympics

Julien “Juju” Alfred made history last Saturday when she won Saint Lucia’s first Olympic gold medal in the women’s 100m at the Paris Games. Three days later, she became a role model for Saint Lucia and the world by winning a silver medal in the women’s 200m.

Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre, expressed immense pride in Alfred’s achievement and proclaimed a public holiday and special recognition for her upon her return to Saint Lucia. He highlighted Julian’s journey from humble beginnings to this historic victory as a testament to her discipline, dedication and hard work.

The Prime Minister recounted Alfred’s journey from her early years in school in Cicerone, through secondary school, college in Jamaica and Texas, USA, and finally graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Youth and Community Development. He also thanked those who helped shape her career for their support, including her former coach Cuthbert “Trios Ti Nay” Modeste and other mentors.

At a news conference on Monday, Prime Minister Pierre praised Alfred for her victory: “Juliane has reached the pinnacle of success with her sporting performance… All the credit goes to Julienne Alfred for her discipline and commitment to becoming a world champion,” he said.

St. Lucia was thrust into the global spotlight by Alfred’s amazing achievements. After winning several titles including the World Indoor 60m long jump, Julian performed well in the Olympic preliminaries and semi-finals, saving his best performance for the final.

Saturday, August 3, was a day that will be remembered in Saint Lucia’s sporting history as Alfred dominated the purple track at the Stade de France in Paris, shone brightly and far outshone her competitors. Coincidentally, while she was racing in Paris, Saint Lucia experienced a “rain of blessings” that added to the excitement across the country.

Fans gathered at various locations including Derek Walcott Square in Castries, the Town Hall Square in Vieux Fort and the bus terminal in Soufriere to watch the global event. During the Carnival celebrations in Gros Islet, Julien crossed the finish line, leaving his opponents far behind in the 100-meter race, and fans cheered.

Born on 10 June 2001, Julien Alfred is 23 years old and a Gemini who has captured the hearts of many Saint Lucians at home and abroad, as well as regional and global fans.
