On Sunday, President Biden announced he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.
The vice president said on social media: “While I intend to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of the party and the country for me to resign from the presidency and focus on the duties of the presidency.”
Biden has promised to address the nation later this week. Although Biden cannot name a candidate, he quickly endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee. Biden and Harris spoke several times early Sunday before Biden’s speech, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Biden posted on social media: “As a 2020 party candidate, the first decision I made was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. This is the best decision I have ever made. Today, I want to fully support and endorse Kamala to become our party candidate this year. Democrats-it’s time to unite and defeat Trump. Let’s work together.”
Harris released a statement on Sunday saying she was “honored to have the president’s endorsement and my goal is to win the nomination.”
“Over the past year, I’ve traveled across the country to talk to Americans about the clear choice in this momentous election. That’s what I will continue to do in the days and weeks ahead,” Harris said. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – to unite our country – to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme 2025 agenda. There are 107 days until Election Day. We will fight together. We will win together.”
