“If a customer tells me that a pair of jeans is expensive, I tell them to buy a new pair,” she said with a smile. “Instead of buying low-quality jeans, I recommend buying good quality jeans that will last a long time, and we’ll take care of them for you.”
Yong tells us that 70 percent of her customers are men (“Men have this preference for jeans, while women may have other choices”), and that alterations account for 60 percent of the work, with the rest being patches and repairs. Minor changes to the design are also common, such as changing a straight-leg jeans to a tapered design.
I asked her if her business had picked up thanks to the current conscious consumerism and green fashion trends, where people are trying to buy less and extend the life of the items they do buy. Perhaps surprisingly, Yong said there hasn’t been an increase in the number of people wanting to repair their jeans, and that the customer base for JeansFix (which was founded in 2013) has always been a unique group of jeans lovers who have long appreciated denim.
