TOKYO: Japan has imposed trade restrictions on Chinese companies as part of a new round of sanctions against individuals and groups supporting Russia’s war on Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Friday (June 21).
The new sanctions also target companies from India, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Japan’s Foreign Ministry said it was the first time Japan had imposed sanctions on Chinese companies over the war in Ukraine.
Targeted companies include Hong Kong’s Asia Pacific Interconnect Ltd., which supplies microchips for Russian drones, and China’s Elofa Electronics Ltd.
The sanctions are consistent with measures previously taken by the United States and other countries, prohibiting Japanese companies from exporting to the above-mentioned companies.
U.S. officials say China is supplying drone and missile technology to Russia’s war effort in Ukraine, supporting the largest Russian military buildup since the Soviet era.
The United States expanded sanctions on Russia last week to include Chinese companies that sell semiconductors to Moscow.
Beijing and Moscow have also taken complex steps to ensure bilateral payments proceed, which could expose some Chinese financial firms to sanctions.
