PARIS (AP) — Jamaica’s Sherika Jackson said Wednesday she will not compete in the 100 meters in track and field at the Olympics, eliminating one of the sprinters expected to provide Shakari Richardson with her strongest competition.
While Jackson confirmed she would focus solely on the 200m, which is typically her stronger event, she didn’t go into further details.
The opening round of the women’s 100m event will take place at the Stade de France on Friday.
Jackson withdrew from an Olympic warm-up event in Hungary earlier this month with leg cramps, but her coach Stephen Francis told the Jamaica Gleaner website this week: “She looks OK to me.”
Defending champion Elaine Thompson-Hera is also out due to injury. Another Jamaican, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, will be competing in her fifth and final Olympics. She has two 100m gold medals to her credit, in 2008 and 2012.
Richardson is the current 100m world champion.
