Mr Yap is Singapore’s most decorated Paralympic athlete and is the current world record holder in that event, as well as the world record holder in the 50m backstroke S2 class.
Earlier in the day, she topped the heats, finishing nearly four seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Aceves.
“It (is about) having to be very consistent,” Yap said. “Training hard is one thing, but being disciplined and consistent is another… I’m representing Singapore and really showing the world who we are and what we can do.”
The six-time Paralympic gold medallist is one of three Singaporean para-swimmers who have qualified for this year’s Paralympics. Toh Wei Soong and Sophie Soon will also compete at a later date.
Tim Yip will compete in the 50m backstroke S2 event.
“The most important race for me is the 100m. I think it’s amazing to have a good result today,” she said.
“(For) the 50m, I’m just going to try my best and swim as hard as I can and we’ll see.”
