An ongoing commitment to patient care through outpatient and home care aims to restore the value of life in illness and dignity in the dying moment.
This is the balance sheet summary of the first year of activity of the Territory Palliative Care Service, which is launched in April 2023 by the Social Security Institute MF Pain Medicine and Palliative Care, the results of which were presented this morning at a press conference.
The data activity started in April 2023 in the presence of the Minister of Health Mariella Mularoni, the Director General of the ISS Francesco Bevere, the Director of the Social Health Department Pierluigi Arcangeli and the Head of the Pain Medicine Functional Module Daniele Battelli.
These figures highlight an overall total of more than 7,200 outpatient services, which also include discretionary visits, infiltrations, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and consultations to emergency rooms and hospital departments.
As for territorial assistance, 61 patients have been cared for at home since the start of the service. Of these, 22 are still actively followed, 5 have been re-entrusted to ISS Oncology, which follows them together with the San Marino Oncology Association, and 4 have been handed over to their general practitioners after their clinical condition has improved.
However, the fact that 30 people were assisted and accompanied in their dying highlights the important nature of palliative care and, in most cases, allowed them to end their lives at home with their families.
