New resolution
The Gaza war, which has been going on for nearly eight months, has caused the heaviest casualties. Israel faces growing opposition and lawsuits at two international courts in the Netherlands.
Algeria has submitted a draft resolution at the UN Security Council “demanding an immediate ceasefire from all parties” and the release of all hostages.
Algeria’s U.N. ambassador, Ammar Bendjama, did not specify when he wanted the draft to be voted on.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, speaking to visiting Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, said he was “deeply saddened” by the situation in Gaza, and Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong said he hoped a vote would take place this week.
“It is time for the Security Council to act. This is a matter of life and death. This is a matter of urgency,” said Nicolas Rivière, France’s ambassador to the United Nations.
Asked about the draft resolution, U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield responded: “We’re waiting to see it and then we’ll react to it.”
Brazil’s relations with Israel have soured over the war, and Brazil recalled its ambassador on Wednesday, further escalating tensions between the two countries.
Meanwhile, the World Central Kitchen nonprofit said it would cease operations in Rafah due to “ongoing attacks” in the southern city.
