Two soldiers killed
The violence on the Lebanese border began when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7. That attack killed 1,194 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
The militants also took hostages, 116 of whom remain in Gaza, but the military said 41 of them were dead.
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 37,431 people, most of them civilians.
Months of negotiations to reach a ceasefire and release hostages have failed to make progress, but mediator Qatar insisted Friday it was still trying to “bridge the differences” between Israel and Hamas.
The war destroyed much of Gaza’s infrastructure, leaving residents short of food, fuel and other necessities.
On June 16, the Israeli military said it would implement daily “tactical pauses in military activities” in the southern Gaza Corridor to facilitate the delivery of aid.
But Richard Piepcone of the World Health Organization said on Friday that “we are not seeing any impact on humanitarian supplies”.
“The market… used to be busy but now there is nothing. I walked all over the market and couldn’t find a kilo of onions, and even if I did find one… it would cost 140 shekels ($37),” Hisham Salim from the Jabaliya refugee camp told AFP.
