Sea swimmers are reminded to be careful around island shores – especially around piers and ports.

Open water swimming has many health benefits and is a lot of fun, but there are also potential dangers to be aware of. Strong currents, changing weather conditions, boat traffic, difficult terrain and debris can all cause problems for ocean swimmers.

Thorough planning, awareness of your surroundings and keeping your eyes open are key ways to reduce risk. It is also important not to swim alone: having a companion can save your life in an emergency.

The Isle of Man Ports and Coastguard Service has published some useful advice which is a must-read for anyone taking part in open water swimming. These include clear procedures for what to do in an emergency, which anyone entering the sea must be aware of.

Designated safe swimming areas and port restricted areas can also be viewed online.
