The patient had monkeypox symptoms in his shoulders and armsThe Isle of Man Public Health Service said the risk to island residents of contracting Manx pox remains low.

As a precaution, the island health service is planning and preparing for any potential cases of Mpox.

The move comes after the World Health Organization took action to boost the global response following a surge in Mpox cases in Africa.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection that causes painful skin lesions and is spread through direct contact.

One case has been confirmed in Sweden and no cases have been reported on the island. Overall, the risk to the public remains low, but people are asked to watch out for symptoms.

The Isle of Man Public Health Service advises that you should be alert to any unusual rashes or lesions anywhere on your body, especially on your genitals. If you have any concerns, contact the Isle of Man Sexual Health Clinic or your GP.

People at higher risk include those who frequently change sexual partners, those who are in close contact with others or those who have recently travelled to any of the affected African countries.

It is important to stress that this disease is not one that affects one group the most, nor is it a sexually transmitted disease – it is spread through close contact.

The main symptoms are:

  • Unusual rashes or lesions on the body, such as the face or genital area
  • fever
  • Muscle soreness
  • Cold and tired
  • Headache
  • Swollen lymph nodes

If you think you have symptoms of Mpox (no matter how mild), please:

  • Call your GP or sexual health clinic to discuss arranging an appointment. Do not come in without an appointment. Your call will be handled securely and confidentially.
  • Avoid close personal or sexual contact with others until you are sure it is not Mpox
