Isle of Man Government – Outdoor Learning Centre officially opens

The Outdoor Learning Centre (OLC) has been officially opened in West Baldwin by Minister of Education, Sports and Culture Daphne Caine MHK.

Formally known as Ardwhallan, the OLC aims to get young people back to their roots by encouraging them to learn important life skills and connect with nature.

The revamped centre offers a variety of outdoor challenges including a problem solving field, orienteering, a bush skills area and a newly revamped adventure course. Each activity is designed to help individuals grow both personally and academically.

Minister Kane said:

“The OLC will improve educational outcomes for young people by combining hands-on learning with risk-taking and problem-solving, equipping them with important skills that support lifelong learning, a key goal of the Island Plan.

“I’m excited that DESC can provide learning opportunities that connect children and young people to nature, and I’m sure the students will have a really crazy time here.”

The opening ceremony is The Government’s Youth Strategy The aim is to ensure all young people “feel they belong, are meaningfully engaged and reach their full potential”.

Greg Stalker, OLC Director and experienced youth worker, said:

“We provide a safe outdoor space where young people can enjoy nature, develop, learn and grow. We are very excited to welcome more groups to experience this educational asset.”

Over the coming months, Year 5 pupils in all primary schools will be taking part in the newly developed Wilderness Education Programme (WEP) and enjoy free sessions designed to showcase a variety of activities whilst encouraging them to become positive role models and team players. The WEP will be delivered in partnership with the Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT).

Beth Penhallurick, MWT Education Officer, said:

“We are delighted to be able to help create a wildlife trail to help young people interact with the native wildlife around this beautiful place.

“Pupils will be encouraged to explore nature using all their senses. Working with the OLC on this innovative project will provide children across the Isle of Man with a deep nature connection experience.”

Plans are underway to introduce paddle boarding and mountain biking.
