On Tuesday 19 March, Manx Care hosted a World Social Work Day conference, bringing together social work colleagues from Manx Care and other government departments. The conference theme was ‘A Shared Future for Change’ and aimed to celebrate excellence and recognise the positive outcomes achieved for children, young people, vulnerable adults and their families/carers. The day provided an opportunity to reflect, network and learn about examples of best practice across the island.
The day was packed with speakers and activities related to staff wellbeing, good practice and resilience. Invitations were sent to all social workers and other social work colleagues within and outside Manx Care. Time was set aside to explore how social workers work with different agencies and stakeholders, encouraging open discussion on where multi-agency collaboration is successful and where challenges exist.
The meeting content includes:
- Positive work attitude – how to stay positive in the face of challenges and setbacks
- Making safeguarding personal – ensuring people remain at the heart of our work to support them
- Using positive behaviour interventions to help people with learning disabilities
- Why life stories matter – helping children and young people understand their past and overcome trauma
- Colleague wellbeing conference discusses challenges, explores options and barriers to self-care
The event was very well attended by social care colleagues and Manx Care would like to thank Douglas Golf Club and Pavilion for facilitating the event venue and Premium Care Ltd for providing the Continuing Professional Development manual for attendees.
Special thanks to Samantha Murphy (Adult Social Workgroup Manager), Ed Coates (Fostering and Adoption Group Manager), Bradley Chambers (Lead Social Worker – Adult Social Work) and Esther Gardner (Business Support) for all their hard work in planning the day.
Teresa Cope, CEO of Manx Care, said:
“This is a fantastic day and an important day showcasing the fantastic work of our social care teams. Our aim is to deliver transformative change for our service users. To change their life experience by providing support, appropriate interventions and person-centred care plans.
I’m so proud of our social care teams and the work they do and look forward to celebrating again next year!’
Bradley Chambers, lead social worker for adult social work, said:
“The most powerful message of the day came from a carer who attended the event and spoke to us about the impact social work has had on her life and the people she cares for. It was fantastic to hear first-hand how social workers and other social care professionals carry out effective assessment and care planning, ensuring first-class services are delivered in the right way at the right time.”
