Noble Hospital officially opened last week (July 12, 2024) a separate space dedicated to women experiencing complications in early pregnancy.
The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) is a space specifically designed to help families through this critical first trimester where pregnant women can be assessed and treated in a separate space from other expectant mothers. The unit has a separate entrance and exit, meaning patients do not have to use the main hospital entrance if they do not wish to.
The Bluebell Suite is a private room within the same unit, designed for parents experiencing miscarriage and infant loss. It is a refuge designed to provide privacy, compassion, comfort and care during an extremely difficult time. This cosy and welcoming space was designed by Manx resident Vicky Christian, who unfortunately experienced multiple miscarriages and a complicated pregnancy between 2018 and 2020. She is using her understanding to help improve services for others, by working with the Integrated Women, Children and Family Care Team at Manx Care to meet the needs of women and their families.
Vicky says:
“These new facilities represent a true commitment to change. They symbolize a commitment to providing the highest standards of care, not only medically, but emotionally as well. Thank you for being here today as we embark on this important journey of hope, healing, and a renewed commitment to compassionate care.”
Both spaces were generously funded by the Friends of Noble Hospital, with matching support from the Scheinberg family. Kevin Kneen of the Friends of Noble Hospital commented:
“We are delighted to be here today to witness the opening of the EPAU and Bluebell Suite. We clearly understand the real needs of the department and we all understand the passion to develop it, so it was an easy decision for us to agree to fund this space. I am confident that these new facilities will fundamentally improve the quality of service and infrastructure for patients.”
Linda Thompson, Clinical Care Group Manager for Women, Children and Families, added:
“I want to thank all the women who have been so brave to share their stories with us – we took the time to listen to each and every one of them.
“I would also like to thank Vicky, who was the catalyst for this project – without her we wouldn’t be where we are today; she has been an advocate for women on the island.
“Thank you very much to the Friends of the Nobles for listening, understanding and prioritising Manx women.
“Finally, thank you to our colleagues who have gotten us to where we are today by providing care, recognizing gaps in services, and acknowledging that this is an experience women will never forget.”
Officially launching the EPAU, Teresa Cope, CEO of Manx Care, commented:
“It is great to see this project come to life – it is the first step towards positive change for the island. The Bluebell Suite was officially opened by Vicky and the whole unit will be open to anyone who needs these specialist services this Friday. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the Friends of Noble for their support of this project and for their ongoing support of Noble Hospital and Manx Care.”
