The Pentagon announced that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will pay an official visit to Cambodia on June 4, 2024. A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh told Radio France Internationale that Lloyd Austin will meet with Cambodia’s new leader Hun Manet to discuss security and defense issues. Lloyd Austin visited Cambodia in November 2022 while hosting the ASEAN+ Defense Ministers’ Meeting. But this official visit comes at a time when Cambodia and China are conducting joint military exercises. This raises the question of whether the U.S. Defense Secretary is concerned about China’s influence in Cambodia during this visit.
