The only woman on the team is Nurul Akmal, who comes from a small village in Aceh province. Nurul finished fifth at the Tokyo Olympics and hopes that more women will be able to represent Indonesia in the sport and qualify for the Olympics in the future.
In Aceh, women are more involved in household affairs. Weightlifting is also seen as a sport mainly for men, which meant her parents initially disapproved of her choice.
“Ultimately, I helped them understand that, and now they’re more proud and supportive, and I was able to raise their profile,” she said.
Eko Yuli Irawan, 35, may be competing in his farewell event after winning a bronze medal in his 2008 Olympic debut at the age of 18.
Today, Eko has participated in four consecutive Asian Games and has stood on the podium in every competition, becoming the Indonesian athlete with the most Olympic medals.
“Maybe in terms of age, I’m already a senior player and we will probably see after the game whether this is the end of my career. What is certain is that this is very important to me. Even if this is the end of my career, at least I will give it a sweet ending,” he said.
