On August 29, 2024, the second Arihant class submarine ‘INS Arighaat’ was commissioned in the presence of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh at Visakhapatnam, Indian Navy. Speaking on the occasion, Raksha Mantri expressed confidence that ‘Arighaat’ will further strengthen India’s nuclear triad, enhance nuclear deterrence, help establish strategic balance and peace in the region and play a decisive role in national security. He termed it an achievement for the country and a proof of the unwavering resolve of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to achieve ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in defence.
Rajnath Singh praised the hard work and synergy of the Indian Navy, DRDO and industry to achieve this goal. He called this self-reliance the foundation of self-reliance. He appreciated that the Indian industrial sector, especially the small, medium and micro enterprises, have received a huge boost through this project and created more employment opportunities.
Recalling the political will of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who compared India to nuclear-weapon states, the Prime Minister said, “Today, India is fast evolving into a developed country. We have to develop rapidly in all fields including defence, especially in today’s geopolitical scenario. Besides economic prosperity, we need a strong military. Our government is working hard to ensure that our soldiers have top-notch weapons and platforms made in India.”
INS Arighaat was built using advanced design and manufacturing techniques, detailed research and development, use of exotic materials, complex engineering and exquisite craftsmanship. It is unique in having indigenous systems and equipment conceived, designed, manufactured and integrated by Indian scientists, industry and naval personnel.
The indigenous technological advancements employed in this submarine make it much more advanced than its predecessor, the INS Arihant. The presence of INS Arihant and INS Arihant will enhance India’s ability to deter potential adversaries and safeguard national interests.
