Indian wrestler Antim Panghal’s entourage is set to be deported from Paris after her sister Nisha tried to use Antim’s credentials to enter the Olympic Village.
The incident took place during the 2024 Paris Olympics, leading to the police intervention and questioning of Nisha. Although she was released, the authorities decided to expel all the entourage and disqualify Antim from the competition.
As a result of this disciplinary violation, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced its decision to send Antim and her support staff back to India, according to French authorities.
After losing to Yetgil Zeynep of Turkey in the women’s 53kg category, Antim returned to the hotel where her designated coach Bhagat Singh and actual coach Vikas were staying.
Antim asked her sister to go to the game village to retrieve her belongings. Nisha managed to enter the game village but was caught by security guards when leaving. Both Nisha and Antim were taken to the local police station to record their statements.
To complicate matters further, Antim’s coaches Vikas and Bhagat allegedly took a taxi in an inebriated state and refused to pay the fare, forcing the driver to call the police. An IOA source said the situation was critical and their security officials were handling the matter.
Antim’s hopes of a bronze medal in the repechage were dashed when Zeynep lost to Germany’s Annika Wendel in the quarterfinals. Antim, a world championship bronze medalist and one of the first to qualify for the Olympics, was eliminated in the first round in 101 seconds.
