Omar Nasir
Former Interior Minister Omar Nasir said the presence of Indian troops on Sri Lankan soil posed a threat to Sri Lanka’s independence.
On the occasion of Independence Day, Omar said that today marks the 59th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s full independence from Britain and the 14th anniversary of the deployment of Indian troops in Sri Lanka.
He said Indian troops arrived in Sri Lanka on March 4, 2010, under a two-year agreement with the then government, and the number of vehicles and personnel has increased after 14 years of the agreement. He said Sri Lanka lost some of its maritime territory and the parties supporting their coming to power and those criticizing them are also maintaining the agreement.
He also accused India of still having the final say in diplomatic and security relations.
“The presence of Indian troops on Sri Lankan soil poses a major threat to Sri Lanka’s independence,” Omar said.
Omar’s comments came as the government said Indian troops in Sri Lanka, where it said 88 Indian soldiers had been deployed, had now withdrawn.
Indian troops withdraw from Sri Lanka. President Mohammed Muizubani promises.
