The Indian Paralympic team on Friday had a grand send-off ahead of the Paris Olympics scheduled for August 28 to September 8. The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) gave a send-off to the Indian team, which comprises 84 athletes in 12 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, weightlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo. “Our Paralympic athletes have an extraordinary ability to overcome obstacles and turn challenges into opportunities. They have shown extraordinary determination and perseverance in their preparations for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games,” Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in a press release.
“Many athletes have benefited from the Khelo India programme, a significant number of whom will be participating in the Paris Paralympic Games. The government is committed to providing them with the resources and support they need to excel at the highest level.
“We stand united in our support for them as they embark on this important journey and are confident that they will bring honour to our country. We wish them the best in their quest to excel on the international stage,” he said.
India won 19 medals at the Tokyo Paralympics and PCI president Devendra Jajaharia is hopeful that the country’s athletes will excel again this time.
“We are extremely proud of our athletes, who train with unwavering dedication and passion. As they prepare to represent India on the world’s biggest stage in Paris, they embody our nation’s spirit of resilience and determination,” Jajaria said.
“Their journey to the Paralympics is a testament to their hard work and we are sure they will make the nation proud. We wish them all the best and are sure that their performance will inspire millions of people in the country.” A special theme song ‘Macha Dhoom’ composed by renowned music director Vivek – Abhishek was also launched during the event.
Additionally, a commemorative book, Breaking Barriers, written by Abhishek Dubey and Mahavir Rawat, was officially launched to celebrate the achievements and aspirations of the Indian Paralympic team.
