Abdullah Shahid, MDP Chairman and former Foreign Minister

MDP Chairman Abdullah Shahid tonight said the name of ‘India Out’ has been changed to ‘India Welcome’, nine months after the government took office.

Addressing the DMK meeting, Shahid said he had said that those intending to come to power should not be chased by neighbouring countries, adding that the earlier cries of ‘India out’ had changed to ‘India welcome’ government after nine months.

Shahid said that the Indian Foreign Minister will visit Sri Lanka next Friday. He warmly welcomed the visit of the Indian Foreign Minister and expressed the hope that the Sri Lankan government will continue to maintain the relations between the two countries as before. This government did not even go around the world to distribute large sums of money, but India postponed the payment of $50 million bonds.

He said the percentage of tourists coming to Sri Lanka from India had fallen by 43% due to government inaction. As a result, he said, resorts were left deserted and occupancy rates had fallen sharply.

Shahid also referred to the earlier statement made by the current government that Sri Lanka’s maritime areas were sold with the participation of India. Shahid called on the government to question the Indian Foreign Minister during his visit to Sri Lanka.
