The number of people granted German citizenship rose sharply again last year, with an influx of migrants from Syria pushing the naturalization process to its highest level since at least 2000, according to official data released on Tuesday.

He said Germany’s Federal Statistical Office said that around 200,000 people acquired German citizenship in 2023, an increase of 31,000, or 19%, from the previous year.

This increase comes after a 28% rise in 2022, also due to the naturalization of a large number of Syrians, as well as the increasing number of people who immigrated to Germany between 2014 and 2016 and met the conditions for citizenship.

The Federal Statistical Office said 75,500 Syrians were granted German citizenship, the largest group, accounting for 38% of the total.

This is an increase of 56% compared to 2022.

These people lived in Germany for an average of 6.8 years before becoming German citizens.

Last year, around 10,700 people from Turkey and Iraq were granted German citizenship, putting these two groups in second place.

The total number of new citizens reached its highest level since records began in 2000, following a change in the law under which citizenship was automatically granted to ethnic Germans from the former Soviet Union who flocked to the country in 2000. They were automatically given German citizenship in the 1990s rather than being forced to apply for it.

Citizenship conditions include a working knowledge of the German language, and applicants must prove they can support themselves financially.

As was the case last year, the law requires that a person must in principle have lived in Germany for at least eight years, although this requirement does not apply to spouses and children.

This period can be shortened to six years for those with “exceptional integration achievements” (such as strong language skills, professional achievements or civic engagement).

New legislation, which will come into effect on June 27, relaxes those rules.

After five years of living in Germany, applicants may be eligible for citizenship if they have achieved “exceptional integration achievements”.

Children born in Germany automatically become citizens if one of their parents has lived legally in the country for five years (rather than eight).
