“Defending democracy is more important than any title. Working for the American people gives me strength and joy, but the sacred task of perfecting our union is not about me. It’s about you. For your family. For your future,” Biden said.
He gave no main reason for his withdrawal in his speech, nor did he mention that he was handing the baton of the White House to Vice President Kamala Harris, or Republican nominee Donald Trump. If Biden wins, everything he has done in the past few years will be wiped out.
“I think the best way to move forward is to pass the baton to a new generation. That’s the best way to unite our country,” Biden said. He went on to describe the achievements of his administration and pledged that he would focus on his work for the next six months until the new president of the United States is sworn in on January 20, 2025.
“That means I will continue to lower costs for working families and grow the economy. And I will continue to defend individual liberties and our civil rights — from the right to vote to the right to choose,” he said, referring to abortion rights.
“The most important thing about America is that it is not ruled by kings or dictators. It is ruled by the people. History is in your hands. Power is in your hands. The idea of America is in your hands,” the 81-year-old Democrat told Americans.
He also said that he felt very honored to have served the country for more than 50 years. “I gave my heart and soul to the country, but I have been rewarded a million times with the love and support of the American people.” He also said that he loved his position, but he loved the country more.
“I believe that because of my accomplishments, my leadership in the world, and my vision for America’s future, I deserve another term. But nothing – nothing – should get in the way of saving our democracy, and that includes personal ambition,” Biden said after making the historic decision to drop out of his re-election campaign.
Biden announced on Sunday that he would not seek reelection as president and expressed his support for Harris, who in the following days won the endorsements of not only the Democratic Party’s biggest names but also the majority of delegates to confirm the Democratic presidential nominee at the Chicago convention in August.
Biden did not mention in his speech any issues with his mental or physical ability to continue running and lead the country for another four years if he wins. The White House on Wednesday rejected suggestions that he had decided to resign due to poor health.
In his speech, he highlighted the economic recovery after the covid-19 pandemic, the reduction of medical costs, the approval of major laws on infrastructure reconstruction, and the leadership role in the world in providing assistance to Ukraine and strengthening the NATO Alliance. In the last six months of his term, he plans to focus on the issues of gun violence and climate change, strengthening the economy and reforming the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris has launched her campaign in full force. She has broken records for campaign fundraising, and Democrats have regained all the energy they lost after the televised confrontation between Biden and Trump, in which it was clear that the Democratic candidate’s strength has been weakened by age. Meanwhile, Trump held a political rally in North Carolina on Wednesday, calling Harris a crazy radical leftist who will destroy the country.
