In 2023, 32% of immigrants living in France were born in Europe. Nearly three quarters of these were from EU countries, especially Portugal, Italy and Spain, which remain the main countries of origin for immigrants born in Europe. The number of immigrants from recent EU or non-EU member states has been increasing since the mid-2000s.
The most common reasons cited by immigrants aged 18 to 59 who were born in Europe and aged 16 or older for coming to France were work (37%) and family (34%). Immigrants born in European countries that have never joined the European Union also frequently cited the need to flee political unrest (28%).
Immigrants from France’s neighbouring countries are more likely to live in border regions: almost four in ten immigrants born in Spain or Italy live in regions bordering their countries of origin. Ile-de-France region, and so do all immigrants.
