The currently jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has acknowledged the existence of divisions and factions within the party and plans to meet both factions at Adiala jail tomorrow, The News reported on Wednesday.
Khan refuted rumours of the existence of a forward bloc within the Tehreek-e-Insaf party and stressed to reporters at the Adiala court that there were no major divisions in the party.
Khan’s comments come amid turmoil in the party, with leaders openly criticising each other. The Tehreek-e-Insaf core committee also recently denied any divisions.
Last month, the secretary general of the Justice and Development Party (JD) Omar Ayub resigned to focus on his role as leader of the opposition in the National Assembly. His resignation followed reports of divisions within his party, with sources telling Geo News that 27 members of the Sunni Ittihad Council (SIC), which is backed by the Justice and Development Party (JD), were considering resigning from the National Assembly in protest against the party’s leadership.
Twenty-one of these MPs had reportedly considered forming the Forward Alliance to protest the leadership’s failure to secure Khan’s release from jail. However, Ayub’s resignation was rejected by the Tehreek-e-Insaf parliamentary party, with the core committee asking him to reconsider his decision.
Notably, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Sher Afzal Marwat was issued a notice to appear in court in May for refusing to cooperate with Ayub and others. A Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf report accused Marwat of getting into an altercation with opposition leaders and workers outside the Islamabad Judiciary Complex after the court ruled against Khan and his spouse in the iddat case.
Recently, Malwat had also demanded the resignation of Shibli Faraz, claiming that only in this way could the party be free from the “Kabza mafia”.
