The US government is providing support to 30,000 students in Pakistan to improve their English proficiency, Deputy US Ambassador to Pakistan Andrew Shawver said on Wednesday.
He made the remarks to reporters after attending the launch of the “Access” scholarship program specifically for English learners.
Andrew Shawver said that the US government has been providing scholarships to students for the past 20 years. He said that the US government also supports several other programs to develop leadership and enhance professional skills. Speaking about his visit to Multan, he said he was happy to visit Multan. The American diplomat, while speaking at the ceremony, said that he was impressed to see the cultural performances of the students.
On the English language entrance scholarship scheme, he hinted that students would definitely improve their English language skills. “We want students to succeed,” he insisted. Andrew added that the scheme had been in place since 2004 and to date 30,000 students had received scholarships for language study.
He expressed high hopes for the new batch of 300 students and said that they will be able to speak English in the near future. The English Entrance Scholarship Program is one of the highlights of the long-term cooperation between the United States and Pakistan. Asim Saeed, Vice President of the University of Education, also said that this is a very beneficial program. It will not only help educate the children, but also help educate 300 families. He also assured that he would cooperate in every possible way to ensure the success of the program.
Coordinator Ms. Rahat and some other officials highlighted the different features of the program and informed that 40 teachers were available to impart language skills to the students. Initially, more than 100 teachers from the region applied but based on appropriate criteria, 40 teachers were finally selected.
They also said that similarly, nearly 1,000 students applied for the scholarships, of which 300 were awarded. During the event, students presented stage plays and other performances, especially those related to the rich culture of South Punjab. The unparalleled performances mesmerized the audience. The US Consul General, Ms. Kristin K Hawkins, and some other guests also attended the event. Later, Deputy Head of the Delegation, Andrew Schofer, also visited Lutfabad Mango Farm (LMFPU).
