Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General Hafeez Rehman on Thursday said Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) could be completely blocked across the country but the move would hurt the interests of businesses.
Speaking before the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecommunication, the PTA Chairman said that our organisation has started whitelisting VPNs to prevent unauthorised services from operating across the country.
He added that despite the availability of VPNs, usage of Platform X has dropped by 70% in Pakistan today, with only 30% of people accessing the app through VPN.
Hafeez Rehman said X had handled only 7% of PTA complaints in the past three months. He also said the decision to unblock X belongs to the federal government. If the government asks us to, we will shut down the social media platform.
Apart from this, Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar said that the protests would not have started if there had been no lockdown in our country targeting religious sentiments.
