Algeria’s Imane Khelif defeated China’s Liu Yang on Friday to win the Olympic women’s boxing welterweight gold medal. Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng and Taiwan’s Chen Nien-chin won bronze.
Khalif, a silver medallist at the 2022 World Championships, and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting were in the spotlight at the Paris Olympics as gender controversy dominated newspaper and television headlines.
Young held his opponent’s arms in the air as the result was announced – a stark contrast to the scene after Khalif’s first match against Italy’s Angela Carini – before Khalif was hoisted on the shoulders of his coach and carried around a crowd of Algerian supporters.
Last year, Yang was supposed to face Khalif in the world championship final, but Khalif was disqualified by the International Boxing Association (IBA).
The IBA said Khalif and Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-Ting “did not meet the eligibility criteria set by the IBA to participate in the women’s competition”.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), which organises Olympic boxing, allowed the pair to compete and strongly criticised the International Boxing Association (IBA), insisting Khalif and Lin were “born women”.
