Three-time Olympic women’s 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon has denied suggestions she was disappointed with her silver medal in the 5000m at the Olympics.
Talking about Citizen TVKipiyegon said she did not expect to be disqualified but was disappointed when the disqualification was announced.
She said this was because she didn’t know what she had done wrong and there were many things going on in her mind at the time.
“I didn’t expect that I would be disqualified. I’m not disappointed to get the silver medal. I’m disappointed to be disqualified without knowing what I did wrong. That 5,000m race took a lot out of my mind,” Kipyegon said.
However, the Olympic record holder said she was grateful to the team for its successful appeal.
She said the call gave her a new lease of life and that’s when she knew she had to go for gold in the 1500m.
“I’m grateful to the whole team and to those who appealed and succeeded, which lifted me up because I know that with the silver medal we now have to go for the gold medal.”
In the 5,000m race at this meet, Kipyegon took the silver medal, just a few seconds behind the gold medal.
Beatrice Chebet of Kenya won the competition.
However, the silver medal also attracted controversy after she was initially disqualified for shoving Ethiopian athlete Tsegay Gudaf.
Kipyegon was disqualified under rule TR17.2.2 (163.2(b)) for pushing or obstructing (O/S).
The law states that any athlete who pushes, shoves or obstructs another athlete during a match can be disqualified by the respective referee based on the referee’s report.
The Kenyan team appealed the decision to disqualify her and had her reinstated.
