Hurricane Irma continues to move southwest, with the northern Caribbean at risk of a direct hit

Hurricane Irma poses a significant threat.

– Irma continues on a west-southwest path that will eventually approach the northern Caribbean Islands late Tuesday night. At 5:00 AM this morning, Irma was located 16.8 degrees east of the Northern Leeward Islands, 52.6 degrees west longitude, or 654 miles. The current southward track is expected to continue until later today, when the hurricane will turn to the west and then to the west-northwest in 36-48 hours. The forecast path will place the eye of Irma just north of the Dominican Republic late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Forecasters warned earlier today that weather conditions in the Dominican Republic will begin to deteriorate Monday night as the far end of Irma’s outer bands take hold. Weather will deteriorate quickly as the storm passes.

Irma is forecast to hit the northern Leeward Islands as a Category 4 hurricane, with a direct hit on Antigua, St. Martin, Haiti and Cuba a likely possibility.
