“At first he was shouting at me, asking ‘do you know what we do to these people in this area’, then the violence started and after I fell, I lost consciousness,” explained the driver, who called the security guards before the incident.
The man who was attacked by the stranger tried to explain that something had gone wrong, but the attacker was not interested and only calmed down after passers-by intervened in the conflict.
“Then I called the police,” the victim said.
He had five previous convictions for attacking an unidentified man in a public place, calling him a pedophile and beating him. Ukmergishki Airidas D. was indicted.
“I regret my actions now because I could have done things differently, but this is the first time I’ve been in a situation like this,” he said.
This unusual story happened at Ukmerge – a social network of Airidas D. one day.FacebookIn the group, which targets Ukmergi people, a photo and a post were seen showing a young man rampaging through a recreation area near the Sventoj River and hanging out with young girls.
“After seeing this “post”, I wrote to the person who created it For a girlSoon, he wrote to me saying that this unknown guy filmed the girls, gave them sausages, took them in the bath with him and said he was rich,” Elidas D later said in an interview, “In order to find out the truth. This was the case, and without waiting, I went to the place indicated by the girl by the Sventoji River and took a walk with the dog. I found a man sitting on a bench in the recreation area by the river, drinking. When I approached him, I immediately asked him who he was, what he was doing there, and if he had interviewed young girls before. Since the guy denied that he was talking to the girls, I took a photo of him and sent it to the girl who made the “post” on Facebook – I wanted to make sure that he was really the person I was looking for. Soon, the girl wrote back saying that this was the same person who talked to her and her friends by the river. “

Airidas D. said he then decided to find out the stranger’s intentions, although he admitted that he could call the police: “I was not completely sure that it was the same person, so I decided to find out the stranger’s intentions. My own circumstances of the incident – I started asking the guy who he was, where he was from and what he was doing here, then I showed him a photo of a girl and asked him if he remembered this girl. Then he started wandering around, making noises. I didn’t know how he would continue to behave, especially because he was drunk and had a poor assessment of the whole situation. “
The man charged testified that it was not him who attacked him first, but the victim: “He grabbed my arm, and in order to push him away from me, I grabbed his neck with my hand, so the push resulted in the blow causing the guy to trip over the bench and fall to the ground. Then, seeing someone walking nearby, he started screaming for help and said he would call the police. I said okay, invite me, it will only get better.”
Airidas D. did not hide this while waiting for the arrival OfficialsThe victim caller was keen to know if he was a pedophile and if he understood “how it was from the sidelines and what the consequences were that awaited him”, but he stressed that he did not talk about prison and how sex offenders were treated there.
The man from Ukmer, who was identified as the victim at the time and found by police arriving at the scene to be 1.76% drunk, explained the incident in more detail.
“That morning, I rode my bike to the holy river, sat on a bench in the rest area to sunbathe, ate the food I brought with me, and browsed my phone, reading the news on the portal,” he said. – At that time, two girls passed by on a motorcycle, and one of them waved to me. Then the girls stopped to smoke – they sat on the bench closest to me, although the whole riverside was crowded with people. Then I told them who should not smoke because smoking is unhealthy, and they answered a little, but I couldn’t hear because I was too far away, so I walked over to them and sat next to them, and I asked them how old they were.
That’s how the conversation started. I had a bag in my hands with the chopped pickled sausages and fried bread I ate, I don’t remember if I gave them a treat or not. Then the girls started to comfort themselves that they had a hard time in Ukmerge, saying that there were a lot of “moroz” in the city, implying that they were victims but didn’t want to say it. Then I started to comfort them, I said you are still young, you may go to school, find like-minded people, find a boyfriend, start a family, everything will be fine, you are all beautiful girls. We talked for a while, and then I went back to the bench where I was sitting before. ”

The young man testified that he had previously mentioned to the girls that he wanted to exchange contact details on Facebook, but they did not agree to such a proposal.
“I went back to the bench for a bit and then went home like the girls did,” he said.
The Ukmer man, who was identified as the victim in the criminal case, said that after returning home, he drank a few bottles of beer, went to bed, and returned to the Sventoji River in the evening.
“I came back, got some wine and drank it, and continued browsing on my phone, when a man walking his dog came up to me, he greeted me verbally, and then sat down in front of me on the other side of the bench”, the victim continued. – He started asking me what kind of sausages I served to the little girl, and then he put his phone in front of me, and he probably started taking pictures. I don’t understand what this guy is saying here. Then the insults and obscenities started, he called me a pedophile, a bastard, and said “Do you know what we do to them in this area?”. Then he suddenly jumped up, walked in front of me and hit me in the face. After the punch, I fell to the ground and I was unconscious for a while, maybe I lost track of time, and then another punch, one hand hit the face, and then a few more punches, hit the chest and stomach, and he also started to choke me. “
According to him, soon the man started sending his dog but it acted calmly and did not react to what was said.
“When he grabbed me by the neck, a couple passing by intervened in the conflict – a man and a woman, and they started shouting and calming the man who attacked me, saying what are you doing here,” the man’s story continued. Who was called a pedophile. – Then he probably got scared and stopped attacking me. I wanted to call for help, but during the struggle, he took the phone from me, but he returned it after the intervention of bystanders. That’s when I called the universal emergency number – 112. While we were waiting for the police, I asked bystanders not to go anywhere, and the man who attacked me continued to threaten me, explaining that, do you know what happens when the girls leave? The parents find out… The police arrived quickly, and later they arrived at the scene, and the two girls who I talked to when I came to the river in the morning also arrived. “
According to the man, when police arrived, his attacker began talking about “some sausages to offer my daughter,” pedophiles, perverts, and something he was allegedly filming.
The victim from Ukmergi said: “When I was in the ambulance, a police officer asked me to show my phone and I agreed, but after checking it they did not find anything.”
Police also interviewed a girl (who was a minor at the time of the incident) Airidas D. was trying to catch a “pedophile” because of a post her friend made on Facebook.
Witnesses said the man who approached her and her friend was drunk and had several cans of beer.
“He invited us to come closer but we refused, but then he came by himself and asked to hand over everything, but when he saw we were scared he said he was joking,” said one of the girls. – After that, the man started talking to us, asked us how old we were, invited us to go swimming with him and said it was a beautiful day. He had a bag of sausages for my friend and me to try, but we refused because we are vegetarians and don’t eat meat. We just tried to ignore him so he would get up. ”
According to the minor, the man then started telling her that she and her friend were very sexy and looked beautiful and offered to exchange contact details on Facebook.

“He said he wanted to write something nice to me and my friend, but we refused and we didn’t give our contact details – we felt he was harassing us,” the minor said, adding that she and her friend felt uncomfortable and both were scared.
When the girls started ignoring the stranger, as the minor said, he understood and after saying he would not bother them anymore, he moved to another bench.
“My friend then took a picture of him from behind and when she got home she uploaded it to Facebook so she wanted to warn parents to be more careful if they let their children near the river,” she said.
At that time, the court, after evaluating all the data collected in the case, concluded that Elidas D.’s “hunting down” suspected pedophiles by the river went too far, because the man who communicated with minors was not such a man. The court said that the negative information spread on Facebook caused anxiety and fear among Ukrainian citizens, who began to be afraid to go to work in the city, go to the store, etc., and even had to take psychotropic drugs – the public believed that he was actually a pedophile.
“I became timid and withdrawn,” the victim explained in court, saying he was forced to give up his job as a delivery driver, took psychiatric drugs because of stress, and almost lost his job as a security guard. All residents of Ukmergė knew about the incident, even relatives living abroad.
“The defendant Airidas D., during a verbal conflict with the victim at a rest area near the Šventosija River on Vilniaus Street in Ukmergės, attacked and beat the victim, who was sitting on a bench in the rest area, on a trivial pretext, due to misjudging the person’s information, because as a result of the physical violence against the victim, the victim suffered a minor health disorder due to the determined injuries, because in a public place he showed a clear disrespect for people, contempt for basic morals and norms of behavior, committed hooliganism and obvious aggressive behavior in a public place, thereby aiming at opposing the people around him (the victim), showing a disdainful attitude. The Court examining the criminal case said that “the attitude towards him led to the seriousness of the disturbance of social order”.
Judge Rinaldas Adamonis It was decided to sentence Airid D. to eight months’ imprisonment, but to postpone the execution for one year, to force him to participate in various programs, and to order the victim to pay compensation for non-pecuniary damages in the amount of 1,000 euros.
