Hungarian pupils will no longer be allowed to use mobile phones at school, with the government officially announcing the measure which will take effect at the start of the new school year on Monday, September 2.

The agency writes that Zoltán Maruzsa, the state secretary for public education, announced on public broadcaster Kossuth that 1.5 million Hungarian students will no longer be allowed to use mobile phones in school stunned.

The Secretary of State stressed that the most important change to take place from Monday as the new academic year begins is the restriction of mobile phone use in schools, a measure that is expected to have a favourable impact on academic performance and the development of social relationships among pupils.

Teachers will decide whether to use smart devices in the classroom

In practice, school internal regulations will set out how devices are collected and returned at the beginning and end of school hours, and how they are stored during school hours.

Hungarian officials said exceptions to the rule are the use of mobile phones and smart devices for health reasons, which can be authorized by the school principal, while for the use of devices for teaching purposes, in the classroom, the school can decide for the teacher.
