A previous report on five years of King Abdullah’s reforms in Saudi Arabia, “Loose Grips, Uncertain Gains,” revealed that the Kingdom was a Dark Ages state governed by unacceptable Sharia law.
Human Rights Watch criticized the existence of “arbitrary red lines” when it comes to challenging Sharia law. “Challenging the religious ideology that underpins the kingdom’s identity remains taboo, as does criticizing designated officials,” it said.

While Human Rights Watch welcomes the reforms made over the past five years, mainly in the areas of women’s rights, freedom of expression, access to justice and religious tolerance, it is not satisfied. It calls for firmer, longer-lasting institutional reforms, otherwise the king’s successor may follow a more conservative path.
Human Rights Watch very clearly called for an end to the sharia’s poor work, as it spoke of the judicial system, “a 1,000-year-old interpretation of unwritten Islamic law.” Do they want Muslims to abandon their religious laws and abide by the laws of the United Nations?
