game of Thrones Fans are learning a lot more about the Targaryens, thanks to Dragon House.
HBO spin-off Season 2 returnsbringing audiences back to the world of Westeros—although the story takes place over 150 years ago. game of Thrones.
The series isn’t just for viewers of the original series, though. There have been several moments that suggest the prequels will reward readers of George R.R. Martin’s Blood and Fireand his A Song of Ice and Fire Series of books.
In the new episode, viewers are flashing back to a time before the series begins – when Aegon the Conqueror ruled the Seven Kingdoms.
A key scene in the show’s first season, episode 1, was requested by Martin himself, when King Viserys (Paddy Considine) tells his daughter and heir, Princess Rhaenyra (Millie Alcock), about a vision that prompted Aegon to conquer Westeros. He tells Rhaenyra that Aegon foresaw “the end of the world of men,” which will begin “a terrible winter that blows from the far north.”
“Aegon sees the darkness coming on the winds, and those who dwell within it will destroy the world of the living,” he said. “When the harsh winter comes, Rhaenyra, all of Westeros must rise up. If the world of men is to survive, a Targaryen must sit the Iron Throne. A king or queen strong enough to unite the realms against the cold and darkness.”
“Aegon called his dream A Song of Ice and Fire. It is a secret passed down from king to heir since Aegon’s time. Now you must promise to keep it. And pass it on.”
What makes this scene particularly exciting is that we know that, thanks to game of ThronesWe also learned about the coming of the Long Night and the battle against the White Walkers. Fans will also remember that a Targaryen named Aegon — better known as Jon Snow (Kit Harington) — played a major role in saving Westeros.
Viserys’s speech also provides some background on the name A Song of Ice and Firewhich many believe is merely a hint at Jon’s true parentage.
However, in a dramatic twist, Viserys shared the prophecy with Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) on his deathbed, believing her to be Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). Because of this, Alicent now believed her husband’s final wish was for her to ensure their son Aegon, rather than Rhaenyra’s family, would take the Iron Throne. It was this misunderstanding that led to future wars.

In a scene from the third episode of the second season of the show, Rhaenyra sneaks into King’s Landing and finds Alicent, hoping to convince her to end the impending war between the two houses. Rhaenyra asks Alicent what Viserys said before he died, and she reveals that Viserys called Aegeon “the prince that was prophesied.”
This leads Rhaenyra to discover that Viserys told her about the prophetic dream, which makes her suspect that Viserys might not realize he’s talking to Alicent – especially since she knows Viserys only told her that.
In the Season 1 finale, Rhaenyra mistakenly believed that Damon (Matt Smith) knew about her father’s prophecy. His response was to strangle Rhaenyra and berate his brother for such a “foolish” belief, indicating that Rhaenyra was indeed the only one who knew Viserys’ intentions.
Why didn’t Viserys tell Daemon about the dream? That’s a good question – most likely because he felt his brother would never believe him.
Speaking about the decision to reference the prophecy in the series, co-producer Ryan J Condal said: Polygon: “Martin tells us this very early on in the room – just casually mentioning, as he does, that Aegon the Conqueror was a dreamer who had visions of White Walkers passing through the Wall and sweeping the land with cold and darkness.
“So of course, with his permission, we incorporated that into the story because it was a great way to resonate with the original series.”
