The match of Parisian boxer Cătălina Axente came to a dramatic end. In the eighth match of the free wrestling competition – 76 kg category, our athlete was seriously injured and was placed on a stretcher with her neck immobilized by a collar. Catalina Axente’s opponent, American Kennedy Alexis Blaise, threw our athlete from her back and, unfortunately, she fell hard on the cervical spine. The doctor rushed over and put a collar around his neck. Our athlete was conscious but left the hall on a stretcher.
The president of the Romanian Wrestling Federation, Răzvan Pîrcălabu, provided information about the injury of Cătălina Axente. He said the athlete complained of severe pain in the right shoulder blade.
renew: Cătălina has no fractures, injuries or neurological deficits
The Romanian wrestling federation announced on Saturday that athlete Katarina Aksente, who was injured at the Olympics, had passed medical tests and had no fractures, injuries or neurological defects.
A sad news, but also very good news. Katarina is out of the race but looks good
Răzvan Pîrcălabu said that in the first stage, it seemed that there were no fractures in the spine. The first tests were done and the motor signs were normal. The nerves were working. He went to the hospital for a check-up. The entire medical team of the COSR was with Catalina, so we did not have to worry. The doctors were there to assist in all the investigations. She complained of very sharp pain in the right shoulder blade in the back, and when she breathed, the pain spread upwards to the neck area.
It’ll be fine, stay calm. Katarina is strong.
“Based on our calculations and experience, we knew that America was a very tough nut to crack. Of course, we didn’t expect a match like this. I thought she would reach the final because she is so good and I thought it was possible that our athletes would be drawn in the requalification, but there will be no more problems for Axente to continue playing”, Pârcălabu said, as reported by COSR.
Valdez advanced to the quarterfinals with an 11-0 record.
Encouragement from Elisabeta Lipă
Despite the fears of Catalina’s horrific accident, Elizabeth Lipa is sure that our fighter will overcome this moment. The champion posted on Facebook. “In moments like this, we only think about Catalina’s health. I wish her a speedy recovery and get over this terrible moment in her career!”
