A consortium of 17 Hungarian universities launched four separate but coordinated space science courses for the first time in September 2022. Among them, the three-semester training of specialists in innovative nutrition and space health sciences was realized under the coordination of the University of Debrecen. The university announced that the first year graduates received their diplomas in the spring, and the university also reported that the program is currently being launched in English under the name “Space Specialists in Life Sciences”.
László Csernoch, Vice-President for Academic Affairs at the University of Debrecen, explained in the announcement that the students, among other things, astronaut They can learn about health risks in space, the environmental psychology of extreme and unusual spaces, foods that can be produced on spacecraft or space bases, and learn about space medicine.
The professor said that participants can acquire knowledge that can be used not only in space but also on Earth, and can help solve current problems. For example, he said that the pressing problem currently faced is that the area on Earth suitable for growing plants is getting smaller and smaller, so it is necessary to develop cultivation technology that can produce a large amount of food in a small space and with little water.
Postgraduate professional training of space specialists in life sciences, coordinated by the Department of Sports and Space Biology of the Faculty of General Medicine, can be applied by those who have obtained a degree or a master’s degree in agricultural, medical and health sciences, a doctorate in natural sciences and at least two years of professional experience in their field, the university noted in its announcement.
Applicant interviews will be held on August 28 train Starting September 20th.
