The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus strictly forbade the First Resurrection services held in some churches on Holy Saturday morning, and in particular explicitly forbade priests to run to the temples to announce the news of the First Resurrection.
In its Bulletin, during its meeting yesterday chaired by Archbishop Georges of Cyprus, the Holy Synod decided that priests are strictly prohibited from running to the Temple, announcing the First Resurrection and any other action, except for the scattering of laurel leaves by pastors, commissioners and priests in a holy way.
As she noted in today’s bulletin, “‘Anasta o Theos’ should not abrogate the Church’s injunction ‘Sighisato pasa sarx broteia…’ nor lead to ridicule of the liturgy”.
However, the Episcopal Church clarified that this does not refer to the removal of black coverings from icons, nor does it mean that believers express joy by constantly banging on the pews.
Furthermore, the Holy Synod informed the crew of the Christi, who are said to be Hieromonk Irenaeus of French origin, former Vatopedino Saint and Sister Anna from Xanthi, that “they have no connection with the Church of Cyprus and do not hold clerical or ecclesiastical rank.” They called on the crew of the Christi to avoid any communication between them.
Furthermore, the Committee decided to confer the post of Chief Chant of the Cyprus Church to Cantor Solon Hatzisolomos in recognition of his long and noble contribution to the art of choral singing in the Cyprus Church, noting that the award will be presented at a subsequent Archbishops’ Synod in the Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus, in a formal ceremony chaired by the Archbishop of Cyprus.

In addition, he decided to hold an episcopal liturgy presided over by the Archbishop of Cyprus at the Holy Church of the Apostle Barnabas of Kokkino Trimitia and the Temporary Cathedral on Saturday, July 20, 2024, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Turkish invasion of the Holy Metropolis of Kyrenia.
In accordance with the rules of the Holy Synod, the liturgy will be followed by prayers for the liberation of Cyprus and for the search for the missing.
He also set the dates for the establishment of memorial services, specifically July 7, 2024, for the ethnic martyr Archbishop Kyprianos and those who were massacred with him, July 14, 2024, for those who fell in the rebellious coup on July 15, 1974, the memorial day for those killed during the Turkish invasion on July 21, 2024, and the memorial day for the Archbishop and Patriarch Makarios on August 4, 2024.
The official memorial service for Patriarch Makarios will be held at the Holy Monastery of Kykos by Archbishop George of Cyprus, supported by the Metropolitans of Kykos and Teliria and other archpriests.
Finally, the Holy Synod reported that it reviewed the financial accounts for 2023 and the budget for 2024 of the Throne Monastery, the Stavropigian Monastery, and KET.
