In a heartwarming display of international solidarity, Lifeline Community Service, a former charity based in war-torn Belfast, Northern Ireland, did its utmost to support the educational needs of pupils at Lallian Memorial School in Nausori in the 1980s.

For more than 20 years, Lifeline has been raising funds through various events, including one impressive campaign where 1,600 cakes were baked and sold.
Rob Pattison, a dedicated science teacher at Lelean Memorial School, thanked Lifeline for their continued support and highlighted the far-reaching impact their contribution has.
“The help they provide to the community resonates deeply with us in Fiji,” Mr Pattison said.
Lifeline was founded at Portadown College in Belfast and provides services primarily to victims affected by conflict in their region.
The article stated that despite facing challenges locally, Lifeline continues to spread their love overseas, demonstrating their commitment to global citizenship and education.
The then Fiji High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ratu Josua Toganivalu, visited Portadown College to personally convey Lelean’s appreciation for Lifeline’s efforts.
During the visit, he presented a piece of traditional Masi cloth to express gratitude to the students of Lelean.
In return, he received a school plaque, symbolizing the bond of friendship and solidarity between the two educational institutions.
“The whole visit was filled with touching moments when Ratu Josua was surprised to hear a traditional Fijian song,” Mr Pattison said.
The touching gesture was orchestrated by Portadown College teacher Jennifer Douglas, who had previously arranged for her students to learn and perform the song in tribute to the Fijian students.
Lifeline’s support has been instrumental in enhancing educational resources at Davulevu School, providing funding for magazine subscriptions, calculators and computer books.
Inspired by an article Mr. Pattison published in Teacher International magazine, Lifeline students launched a fundraising campaign to address Lelean’s special needs, particularly in science education.
“The initial donation came from their joint efforts to bake and sell cakes,” explained Mr Pattison. “They have since organised a number of fundraising events, including the upcoming walkathon, to continue supporting our school.”
