Shermen Valijev made history by winning the first Olympic medal for Albania.

The 74kg freestyle wrestler won bronze against Tajikistan’s Viktor Rashaddin on Saturday night.

Validev dominated the challenge, leading throughout and finishing the match with a score of 6-2.

Shermen Valijev is a naturalized Russian Albanian. The 26-year-old from South Ossetia, Russia, joined the Albanian team in 2024 as a member of the wrestling team of the Tirana Sports Club.

He won the world championship while playing for the Russian U-23 team at the championship held in 2021 and has won several international medals.

This is the first medal in Albania’s history as a participant in ten Olympic Games.

But the Albanian Olympic team in Paris has another golden chance to win a medal, after Iran’s Amzad Khalili defeated freestyle swimmer Islam Dudayev to win the bronze medal in the 65kg freestyle event.

On Sunday, Dudayev will face American Retherford, and if he wins, he will have a chance to compete for the bronze medal against Hungarian Musukayev.
