Historian Don Hector Silva questions false narratives at Belmopan Day celebrations

Don Hector Silva, a well-known historian in the town of San Ignacio, has publicly expressed his frustration with the ignorance and misinformation surrounding Belmopan’s history. He inserted the facts about Belmopan’s origins last Wednesday during his morning show on Love FM. Despite his clarification of the incident, officials at the weekend Belmopan Days continued to spread a false narrative about the capital’s origins. The false narrative about the founding of the capital continued during an official ceremony held at the Megadon Park on Saturday. The keynote speaker was Mayor Pablo Cavicchi.

The decision to build Belmopan was made in 1960, 14 months before Hurricane Hattie made landfall in Belize City, according to Don Hector, a 91-year-old historian who was commissioned by the late George Cadle Price to find a site for Belmopan.

The idea of building a new capital was proposed in 1960, construction began in 1964, and the city was officially inaugurated in 1970. In recognition of Don Hector Silva’s key contribution to the construction of Belmopan, an airstrip on the outskirts of the city was named after him.
