Jamaican reggae artist Ini Kamoze’s Here Comes the Hotstepper has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America thirty years after its release.
The certification was awarded on Friday, August 9, marking the equivalent of two million units in sales and streaming.
“Here Comes the Hotstepper” is a song co-written and recorded by Jamaican dancehall artist Ini Kamoze, also known as bumhole warrior. The song was released on August 18, 1994 by Columbia Records as the lead single from his 1995 album of the same name, and was featured on the soundtrack to the film Prêt-à-Porter. The song is known for its “naaaa na na na naaaaa…” chorus, which was inspired by Cannibal and the Headhunters version of “Land of 1000 Dances”.
The song is Kamoze’s only song to enter the top 40 of the United States Billboard Hot 100, reaching number one on December 17, 1994, and remained at the top of the chart for two consecutive weeks. The song also became a number one hit in Denmark, New Zealand, and Zimbabwe, and reached the top 10 in 13 other countries. Irish DJ John Gibbons remixed the song in 2018.
Hollywood stars starring in the film include Sophia Loren, Kim Basinger, Forest Whitaker, Lauren Bacall, Julia Roberts and others.
