Actor Swara Bhasker says the entertainment industry has always been a patriarchal power structure where women who speak out are labelled troublemakers. This comes as the Justice Hema Commission report on sexual exploitation in the Malayalam film industry has created a stir with more people coming forward to share their personal stories. After reading the 233-page report written by the government-appointed panel, the actor, who spoke openly about Kerala’s #MeToo moment, posted a lengthy statement on Instagram.
Swara Bhasker’s detailed post was titled: “I just finished reading the findings of the abridged version of the Hema Commission report and they are heartbreaking… and familiar! Here are some thoughts…” After praising the “brave” women who testified at the Hema Commission, she wrote in the following paragraph: “Reading the Commission’s findings was heartbreaking. Even more heartbreaking, it was familiar. Maybe not every detail, or every nuance, but the big picture of the women testifying was all too familiar.”

“Every day of shooting, pre-production and post-production is a day of counting votes and spending money. No one likes to be interrupted. Even if the interrupter has spoken up for what is ethical. It is much more convenient and financially practical to continue shooting,” added Swara Bhasker.
Swara, who is known for her candid views on contemporary topics, expressed support for the women who spoke out and the Women in Film Coalition (WCC), which has demanded that the Kerala government appoint an expert committee to look into the working conditions in their industry.
“The entertainment industry has always been a male-centric industry and a patriarchal power structure. It is also very sensitive and risk-averse. Silence is the norm and in the film industry, silence is appreciated, practical and rewarded. The entertainment industry is not only patriarchal, but also feudal in nature. Successful actors, directors and producers are elevated to the status of demi-gods and everything they do is acceptable,” the actor continued.
Bhasker is known for his films like Tanu and Manu get married Franchise rights, Neil Bart Silenceand Viretti WeddingShe added: “Let’s be clear, when the power equation is so distorted, newcomers and other women who accept these conditions cannot be blamed for working within a framework they did not create. Those who hold power and create conditions where women have no choice but to work must always be held accountable.”
Hema Committee Report
The president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), renowned actor Mohanlal, resigned on Tuesday along with other executives following strong criticism over allegations of sexual harassment by some members of the organisation. After the investigation, other actresses, including one from Bengal, came forward with allegations of sexual harassment against some of the most prominent figures in the Malayalam film industry, such as respected director Ranjith and actors Siddique and Mukesh.
