Bhutan’s aviation and tourism industries have made significant progress, with the country’s first private helicopter company, Heli Bhutan, set to offer premium helicopter services, providing an alternative to the single state-owned service.
As Drukair struggles to meet the growing demand, Heli Bhutan aims to fill the gap with a range of high-quality services.
Heli Bhutan aims to enhance the country’s appeal to high-end tourists by providing services such as sightseeing tours, passenger transport, aviation operations, rescue operations, etc.
The company also hopes to help boost tourism in the country by providing a reliable transportation option.
Heli Bhutan has unveiled its website detailing its service, which will begin with an Airbus H-125 helicopter. The versatile high-altitude model, known for its adaptability and ability to carry up to six passengers, is expected to arrive in Bhutan in January next year.
The company will start taking pre-orders in October and has recruited two experienced European pilots to fly the aircraft.
According to company officials, these services are designed to ensure utmost safety and allow tourists to explore Bhutan’s stunning landscapes and cultural heritage.
CEO Chencho Dorji said he was inspired to start Heli Bhutan after a foreign friend suggested it after visiting Bhutan. The company has been in development for nearly five years and is in the final stages of applying for an air operator certificate from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bhutan.
Rates for the service have not yet been determined.
The official launch is scheduled for February 21, 2025, which coincides with the birthday of His Majesty the King.
Chencho Dorji said Heli Bhutan is in line with His Majesty the King’s vision for the Gelephu City of Mindfulness to enhance connectivity, attract talent and position Bhutan as a top destination for cultural, adventure and spiritual tourism.
The company was established with foreign direct investment, using a 70:30 investment model, with investors coming from the United States and Canada.
